Participants in the 'Green Tent' activities, organised by 'A Flower Each Spring' programme, highlighted the great role played by endowment in achieving sustainability and environmental development, especially those related to land reclamation, re-industrialisation and recycling.
During the symposium entitled 'Contributions of the endowment to the sustainability of environmental development', they stressed that the endowment represents one of the most wonderful forms of humanitarian co-operation, especially those related to land reclamation, the construction of canals and drains, rationalisation of water consumption, recycling and preserving the environment in general.
In this regard, the head of 'A Flower Each Spring' programme, Dr Saif bin Ali al-Hajri, explained that endowment contributions have the most prominent role in implementing social responsibility, noting that it guarantees the partnership between the government, the private sector and civil society and adherence to the law and ethical standards of society. It also guarantees interaction between the various activities on the one hand, and the environment on the other hand. He added that the Islamic religion is concerned with the concepts of sustainability and resource conservation, the concept of social responsibility, and the regulation of the relationships between members of society on the basis of partnership.
Dr Abdullah bin Ibrahim al-Sada, a member of the High Commission of the Muslim World League, spoke about the attention given by the Prophet, peace be upon him, to the idea that a Muslim helps other people of all colours, religions and countries, therefore, he urged good deeds that extend spatially and temporally. He added that there are other areas that are no less important than mosques, water wells, and the printing of Qur'ans, such as health, public education, research and others, which calls for greater efforts to attract philanthropists to donate to these areas.
Dr al-Sada touched on the issue of extravagance and how the Islamic civilisation is based on rationalisation to provide resources for future generations, pointing out to the importance to spreading the idea of endowment for environmental issues in order to preserve water, air and soil. For his part, head of the scientific research team at the Ministry of Municipality and Environment Dr Mohamed Saif al-Kuwari reviewed the experience Qatar in recycling construction waste resulting from modernising its infrastructure, demolishing old buildings and establishing modern cities, and how it was able to benefit from 90mn tonnes of waste by recycling it.
Dr al-Kuwari talked about the various stages that the project went through, which were successful in 2019, thanks to the co-operation of various executive, academic and scientific institutions and companies operating in the country, pointing out that work is now underway on other recycling projects in order to protect the Qatari environment.
In the same context, the participants in the Green Tent symposium of academics, scientists, specialists and experts from Kuwait, Oman, Egypt, the Emirates, Sudan, Algeria, Morocco, Tunisia, Lebanon and the United Kingdom talked about the role of the endowment in sustainable development, and how Islam has paid great attention to the environment and encouraged Muslims to preserve it and maximise its resources. They stressed that governments cannot achieve sustainable development goals on their own, without the assistance of the civil society institutions, individuals and private companies through endowment and voluntary activities, far from the bureaucracy of government agencies.
They affirmed that endowment institutions can participate in achieving development goals through human development, spending on education and its institutions, investment projects, eradicating poverty and hunger, and economic development, calling for the publication of successful experiences of endowment institutions.
A number of participants also reviewed their countries' experiences with endowments dedicated to spreading environmental culture and awareness among individuals, the importance of protecting the environment, contributing to projects for preserving, greening and developing the environment, supporting the implementation of projects related to combating environmental pollution, participating in training the national cadres working in the fields of the environment, contributing to every effort seeking to improve the environment and develop it to the best, and coordination and integration with governmental and civil bodies and agencies in this field.
