Hamad Medical Corporation (HMC) has issued an advisory on how to maintain dental health during Ramadan.
The dental tips offered by HMC through an infographic on social media are as follows:
* Brush immediately after Iftar and Suhoor meals.
* Don't forget to floss after Suhoor.
* Multiply the consumption of water during non-fasting hours.
* Cut back the amount of sugary soda, coffee and tea as they cause dehydration.
* Increase your intake of fruits and vegetables.
* Avoid sticky foods.
* Using 'Miswak' during fasting hours helps clean teeth, stimulate saliva that prevents dryness of mouth and bad breath.
In another infographic on social media, HMC also explained how to cope with bad breath during Ramadan.
"Bad breath is usually caused by a build-up of bacteria in the mouth," HMC said, listing the following measures:
* Use mouthwash to rinse; even rinsing with plain water helps against bad breath.
* Rinse your mouth from time to time during the day, as during ablution.
* Use a tongue scraper or brush to reduce oral bacteria accumulating on the tongue's surface.
* Smoking is one of the reasons for bad breath. Fasting is an opportunity for quitting this habit.
* Using 'Miswak' during fasting hours helps stimulate saliva that prevents dryness of mouth and bad breath.
* Multiply the consumption of water during non-fasting hours.
* If you use dentures, make sure that you clean them properly as uncleared dentures are a reason for bad breath.
