Tomas Tatar scored two goals and Paul Byron had two assists as the Montreal Canadiens recorded a 4-2 victory over the visiting Toronto Maple Leafs on Monday.
The result snapped the Canadiens’ three-game losing streak, and improved their record to 2-3-1 against first-place Toronto this season.
The Leafs suffered their first regulation loss in 11 games (9-1-1) and saw their six-game winning streak snapped.
Jack Campbell lost for the first time in 12 outings, ending the Maple Leafs goaltender’s NHL-record streak of 11 consecutive victories to begin a season. Campbell stopped 21 of 24 shots.
Nick Suzuki and Josh Anderson scored Montreal’s other two goals. Auston Matthews scored his league-leading 32nd goal of the season. The Toronto forward has scored in each of his last five games, and has 17 points (11 goals, six assists) over his last 10 games.
John Tavares also scored for the Maple Leafs.
Tatar put Montreal ahead after just 1:17 of action. A turnover and then a strangely deflected puck went right to Tatar in front of the net, and the forward buried the chance for his ninth goal of the season.
At the 7:53 mark, Suzuki extended the Canadiens’ lead on a power-play goal. It was a much-needed breakthrough with the extra attacker for the Habs, who were just 1-for-21 on power plays in their previous seven games.
The Maple Leafs had more giveaways (four) than shots (three) in a lacklustre first period for the visitors, but they rebounded in the second frame to tie the score on the goals from Matthews and Tavares.
Just 85 seconds after Tavares’ equalizer, however, the Habs regained the lead on Anderson’s 15th goal of the season. Leading a two-on-one rush, Anderson faked a pass and took the shot himself, beating Campbell on a wrist shot.
Canadiens goaltender Jake Allen stopped 23 of 25 shots. Allen won for just the second time (2-5-4) in his last 11 games.
Zach Hyman recorded an assist on Tavares’ goal to extend his points streak to five games. Hyman has seven points (two goals, five assists) during the five-game stretch.

Stolarz’s 46 saves help
Ducks dump Sharks
Anthony Stolarz made a career-high 46 saves in his third start of the season as the visiting Anaheim Ducks defeated the San Jose Sharks 4-0 on Monday. The save total was the highest in franchise history during a shutout. The old mark of 45 saves was set by Dominic Roussel in a 1-0 road win over the Colorado Avalanche on Dec. 22, 1998.
Stolarz earned his first shutout since a 1-0 win against the visiting New York Rangers on Jan. 29, 2019, when he played for the Philadelphia Flyers, and the third of his NHL career. He has made 20 NHL starts spread over four seasons while appearing for Philadelphia, Anaheim and the Edmonton Oilers.
Alexander Volkov scored two goals and Max Comtois had a goal and an assist for the Ducks, the last-place team in the West Division. Rickard Rakell also produced a goal.
Martin Jones made 17 saves for the Sharks, who remain four points behind fourth-place Blues with 15 games left for each team. San Jose lost for the third time in four games. Anaheim had lost five of its previous six games (1-4-1). The Ducks scored the first of their three first-period goals at 1:59.
Josh Manson started the first scoring play when he poked the puck off the stick of Christian Jaros as tried to exit the San Jose zone.
The puck went to Comtois, who passed it to Derek Grant above the right circle. Grant’s shot glanced off the skate of San Jose defenseman Radim Simek and went to Comtois, who redirected it into the side of the net for his team-leading 12th goal of the season.
Volkov made it 2-0 at 8:12 when his stick blade connected with the back of Tomas Hertl’s stick blade just as he was touching the puck, knocking it into the net.
It was his second goal with Anaheim since he was acquired in a trade with the Tampa Bay Lightning on March 24.
Adam Henrique set up Volkov’s second goal when he brought the puck behind the net and then centered it to Volkov, who chipped it in the net for a 3-0 lead at 12:19. Rakell made it 4-0 when he scored on a wrist shot from the high slot at 3:26 of the third period. The Ducks played without captain Ryan Getzlaf, who sat out for the fourth time in the past five games due to an upper-body injury.
Anaheim also traded defensemen Ben Hutton (to the Toronto Maple Leafs) and Jani Hakanpaa (to the Carolina Hurricanes) on Monday. To fill the voids, Jacob Larsson moved into the lineup after serving as a healthy scratch the past three games, and Andy Welinski played after spending the past five games on the taxi squad.
