The demand for drive thru, online, and home delivery services has increased significantly due to the new coronavirus (Covid-19) restrictions, it is learnt.
Speaking to Gulf Times, LuLu Group International regional manager Shanavas P M said they have been receiving huge online orders since the new Covid-19 restrictions were announced recently.
He said that food items, mainly groceries, continue to be bestsellers as many customers seek to ensure that they have enough essentials at home, especially during the upcoming Ramadan.
A number of categories such as cooking and kitchen wares, and baking equipment, are also fast-moving non-food items at LuLu, Shanavas added.
Meanwhile, it is learnt that fast food chains, as well as eateries and restaurants, across Doha have been witnessing long queues of customers (both individuals and motorists) at their drive-thru areas since last week.
“My family and I didn’t have the time to cook, so we preferred to pass by a fast food chain near our house,” said Filipino expatriate Elpidio O. “The queue was too long, but that also gave us the chance to bond while waiting for our turn to order.”
In the coming days, he said they will just order online for groceries and other essentials, which he described as “a good and safer way” to shop.
Elpidio lauded a number of supermarkets and many retail stores for lowering their minimum order amount for customers to avail of free delivery.
That way, he said many residents will be encouraged to shop online, which can save time and effort, as well as helping to prevent the spread of Covid-19.
An employee of another supermarket, which also offers online and home delivery service, echoed Shavanas’ view, saying that they were prompted to increase the number of delivery teams this month.
Apart from safety concerns, he said many residents now find it more comfortable and practical to order online while working from home.
Like other supermarkets and stores, he noted that they also saw a spike in the number of online orders over the past few days since the new Covid-19 restrictions were announced.
