The Qatar University (QU) Health Cluster graduate programmes office has launched the first Master of Science and Graduate Certificate in Health Professional Education (HPE) from QU. It is the result of a joint effort of the QU Health Cluster members, College of Health Sciences, College of Pharmacy, College of Medicine and College of Dental Medicine, with inputs from the College of Education and external stakeholders, including Hamad International Training Centre and the Medical Education Department at Hamad Medical Corporation.
The programme aims to deliver a high-quality, progressive co-educational graduate programme that prepares competent graduates with the knowledge, skills and professional attitudes needed to improve health professional education and associated research that actively contributes to the needs and aspirations of society, QU has said in a statement.
The programme is designed with future students in mind. The courses are designed to be flexible to fit the needs of healthcare professional’s busy calendars. Each course will provide the necessary underpinning of theories, principles models and frameworks of design, delivery, assessment and evaluation to improve your teaching practices, whether it be at the bedside or in a classroom.
"Each course in this programme has been expertly curated and designed as a blended curriculum. You can expect purposeful asynchronous activities to be blended with meaningful face-to-face activities using the best available evidence to inform our content," the statement notes.
The programme consists of two tracks: MSc in HPE: 6x4 credit courses (total 24 credits), including a thesis (6 credits) over two years; and Certificate in HPE: 3x4 credit courses (total 12 credits) without a thesis over one year.
Students who enter the certificate track may transfer into the MSc programme, pending meeting the requirements for admission and supervisor availability. Students who enter the MSc track are expected to continue through the entire MSc programme.
Dr Derek Stewart, professor and manager of Academic Quality at QU Health, led the development of the programme. He says, “We are confident this programme will be at the forefront of health professional education in the region, and indeed across the world. We received excellent feedback on our proposal from three leading international experts in this field.”
Dr Egon Toft, professor and vice-president for Medical and Health Sciences, said: “We are delighted to have received support for this programme from the Qatar University Board of Regents. This gives an opportunity to advance health professional education in the country enhancing the reputation of the university. It is an innovative and exciting development, directly aligning with the ‘Reform to Transformation’ 2018-2022 strategy of the university, Qatar National Vision 2030 and the National Health Strategy 2018-2022.”
Dr Daniel Rainkie, acting programme director, added: “Applications are open for our first intake. We are excited to invite our first cohort of students to this important and innovative programme.”
