• Decision taken to meet surge in coronavirus cases
• Hospital will add 400 beds, 150 ICU beds if needed
• Emergency Department to close at midnight today
Hamad Medical Corporation announced that starting Friday, Al Wakra Hospital has been designated as a facility to care for Covid-19 patients. The decision was made to boost capacity that is resulting from the rising number of Covid-19 cases.
Al Wakra Emergency Department will be closed starting midnight today. Al Wakra hospital will become the 7th HMC facility designated for Covid-19 care.
The cabinet had decided in its Wednesday meeting to stop the provision of medical services in private health facilities, except for emergency cases, and allow any of these private health facilities to provide some of their medical services if possible through modern means of communication. The decision was part of a strategy to enhance the ability of medical care workers to provide healthcare related to Covid-19 and the vaccination programme. Closing nonessential services will help support efforts to respond to the Covid-19 pandemic.
Chief Medical Officer at HMC Dr Abdulla al-Ansari said that Al Wakra Hospital will be a great boost to the capacity designated for Covid-19 patients. He said the decision regarding the hospital was part of a strategy to ensure the healthcare system's ability to meet any future increase in the number of Covid-19 patients who require hospitalisation. He said that Al Wakra Hospital will add 400 beds and 150 Intensive Care Unit beds in case they are needed.
He noted the increase in cases was also accompanied by an increase in hospitalisation with mild to severe cases. He added there are currently more than 2050 Covid-19 patients receiving treatment at HMC facilities, including 350 in the ICU and that it was clear that cases are more severe with the arrival of the second wave compared to the first.
All medical services provided at Al Wakra hospital except for dental care, dialysis, and treating burns will be moved to other medical facilities.
Residents of Al Wakra must seek other facilities for these services:
• For urgent but non-life-threatening conditions call HMCs Urgent Consultation Service on 16000 from 7am to 3pm, seven days a week.
• For life-threatening medical emergencies requiring immediate transfer to an emergency department call 999.
• Hamad General Hospitals Trauma and Emergency Department in Doha remains fully operational 24/7 for serious medical emergencies.
• Visit one of the eight Urgent Care Centers across Qatar run by Primary Health Care Corporation providing care for urgent but non-life-threatening conditions. (QNA)
