Qatar Charity (QC) has delivered many wheelchairs to the Elderly Empowerment and Care Centre (Ehsan) to provide them for key shopping malls in Qatar, aiming to facilitate the movement and mobility of the elderly while they shop.

"The wheelchairs provided by Qatar Charity, which is concerned with the health development of the elderly in society, comes as part of its efforts to promote the recognition of their contributions to social, economic and cultural development, support their active participation in various fields, and raise awareness of their rights in society," QC said in a statement on Wednesday.

Farid Khalil al-Siddiqi, head of the Local Projects Section at the Programmes and Community Development Sector of QC, handed over the wheelchairs to Jaber Mohamed al-Marri, manager of the Communication and Media Office at Ehsan, which provides various services like psychosocial care and organises several events and activities for the elderly of society.

Mementos were exchanged between the two sides after the handover of the wheelchairs.

Al-Siddiqi said the provision of wheelchairs to Ehsan falls within the framework of the efforts made by QC for community service, in co-operation with various organisations, youth initiatives and individuals. He also noted that Qatar Charity had previously provided wheelchairs for Qatar Society for Rehabilitation of Special Needs and Al Shafallah Centre for Persons with Disabilities.

Al-Siddiqi added that Qatar Charity seeks to provide electric wheelchairs for the elderly with the support of benefactors in Qatar, who can donate through QC’s website, app and collection points to make the mobility of the elderly easy. He pointed out that Qatar Charity also pays visits to the elderly and holds other programmes for them during Ramadan.

Al-Marri thanked QC for providing the wheelchairs for the benefit of the elderly, noting that Qatar Charity is Ehsan’s important partner that extends support for services meant for the elderly.

Al-Marri added that the wheelchair service will be available at shopping malls where the elderly come to shop, looking forward to providing more services for them in other places such as tourist attractions, with the support and co-operation of various bodies within the country.

He also indicated that QC is keen to implement many projects in partnership with Ehsan for the elderly, in addition to implementing programmes for them during Ramadan.
