Women are increasingly proving their prominence and influence in the administrative, business and economic ecosystem, thus helping Qatar etch a special place in the world for gender equality.
The US-Qatar Business Council managing director (Doha) Sheikha Mayes bint Hamad bin Mohamed bin Jabr al-Thani laid out facts and figures in support of this in a NASDAQ trade talk, coinciding with the International Women’s Day.
"Women play an important and incredible role in Qatar's rapidly developing economy," she said, highlighting that nearly 30% of the executive or decision making positions is occupied by females and that the proportion of females occupying executive position has almost tripled since 2013.
On their entrepreneurial abilities and aptitude, she said 60% of the Qatar Business Incubation Centre grant recipients are women.
Qatar has the highest females’ economic participation rate of 59% in the Arab world.
Also highlighting that two-third of all Qatari University graduates is women; she said there are twice as many females enrolled in universities as men.
Asserting that the USQBC develops, supports, and advances the bilateral business relationship between the US and Qatar; she said Qatar is increasingly becoming an important investor in the US.
In this regard, she cited Qatar's investment in oil and gas project Golden Pass Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) terminal in Texas. Golden Pass LNG is a joint venture between Qatar Petroleum (70%) and ExxonMobil (30%).
Qatar's hydrocarbon bellwether is investing $10bn in a joint venture with ExxonMobil for the Golden Pass LNG terminal.
On the potential for the US investments in the country, Sheikha Mayes highlighted that $200bn worth projects are currently under pipeline in Qatar with the sports sector alone has $25bn projects.
"Qatar is a quickly growing and evolving economy and the business relations and opportunities between two countries are constantly evolving. Healthcare technology, food security and infrastructure are some of the areas that the US companies could explore," she said.
Doha also offers immense scope to the transportation and logistics sector as the country seeks to central gateway to the region, she added.
Earlier USQBC managing director Mohamed Barakat had said the 850 US companies operating in Qatar, including 120 wholly-owned US companies and new projects in the pipeline, are solid indicators of the confidence US investors have in its growing commercial partnership.
US energy giants like ExxonMobil, ConocoPhillips, Chevron Phillips Chemical Company and Excelerate Energy hold high stakes in Qatar’s energy sector; while construction majors like Bechtel, Zachry Group, and McDermott International have had significant engagements in Qatar in the development of critical infrastructure projects.
On the USQBC's business portal, which will help both the US and Qatari entities connect with one another, besides providing important information on trade and investment between the two countries; Sheikha Mayes said it is currently under development.
Terming the "Year of Culture Qatar-USA 2021" as very "significant" event; she said it helps in building upon the solid foundation of already existing strong bilateral ties.
The Qatar-US Year of Culture 2021 contains various events celebrating relations between Qatar and the US through cultural partnerships between American and Qatari organisations.
