Dr Hanadi al-Hamad, National Health Strategy 2018-2022 lead for Healthy Ageing, has called upon family members to support their elderly relatives to get vaccinated against Covid-19.
The official explained that it is the responsibility of children and family members of elderly relatives to support them to get vaccinated. “Now that we have approved and effective vaccines, elderly people have the opportunity to become protected and live free from the threat of this virus. I ask anyone with elderly relatives who are not yet vaccinated to support your elderly mother, father and loves ones to get vaccinated and get protected. Please ensure they understand that the vaccines are safe, and more than 327,000 doses have been safety administered to the most vulnerable people in Qatar.”
Dr al-Hamad highlighted that older people have a significantly increased risk from Covid-19. “People over 60 years of age are more likely to get sick, more likely to need medical treatment, more likely to require admission to ICU and, sadly, more at risk of dying as a result of severe complications from Covid-19.”
“The national Covid-19 vaccination programme is now moving at pace and it is pleasing to know that more than half of Qatar’s elderly population have now received at least one dose of the vaccine, with 61% of people over 70 years of age and 55% of people over 60 years of age having received at least one vaccine dose,” added Dr al-Hamad.
Dr al-Hamad said that getting vaccinated is easy as vaccines are available in all 27 primary health centres and HMC homecare teams are vaccinating housebound patients in the safety and comfort of their own homes. She said anyone over 60 years of age should call on 4027 7077 to book a vaccination appointment at a primary health centre.
