The Bangladesh embassy in Qatar organised a programme on the occasion of Shaheed Dibash (Martyr’s Day) and International Mother Language Day.
As part of the programme, an online speech competition and a quiz contest in Bengali were held on February 20 with the participation of Bangladeshi nationals residing in Qatar.
The speech competition was inaugurated by Bangladesh ambassador Md Jashim Uddin. In the competition, nine contestants from three groups secured first, second and third positions.
The winners are Ummea Hani, Samrin Jahan Sara, Samia Akhtar, Md Didar Uzzaman, Mohsin, Mahzebin Binte Hasan, Maisha Zaman, Rahnuma Anjum and Mahmudul Alam.
A total of 10 contestants got the highest marks in the quiz competition. The winners are Durriyah Alisha, Fakrul Alam, Billal Hossain, Mifta Ul Falah, Obaidullah Al Rafi, Jannatul Maowa, Mahmudur Rahman, Kamal Uddin, Kamal Hosen and Jahangir Kabir.
The national flag was officially hoisted at half-mast at the embassy premises yesterday morning to mark the day. In compliance with local Covid-19 restrictions, a discussion meeting was held with limited participation.
The discussions began with a recitation from the Holy Qur'an, followed by special prayers for the salvation of the departed souls of all the martyrs and for the well-being of Bangladesh.
Messages from the Bangladesh president, prime minister, foreign minister and state minister for foreign affairs were also read out.
Taking part in the discussion, the Bangladesh ambassador paid homage to the martyrs and said Bangladesh's independence struggle started with the language movement, which resulted in the country’s independence in 1971 under the leadership of Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman.
He called upon expatriates to contribute to the development of Bangladesh under the leadership of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and said through this contribution, it would be possible to show due respect to the sacrifices of the language martyrs and the heroes of the war of independence.
He highlighted the success of the Bangladesh government in tackling the coronavirus and its economic success despite many constraints, and emphasised the importance of projecting the positive achievements of the country.
Regarding celebration of the Mujib Year to commemorate the 100th birth anniversary of Father of the Nation, the ambassador said an interview series titled 'Bangabandhu Dialogue' has been planned from March until December 2021 in which freedom fighters, Bangladeshi professionals in Qatar, women entrepreneurs and the young generation will participate.
Besides, an initiative has also been taken to make a video titled ‘Bangabandhu in contemporary and all-time context’. A detailed programme has been chalked out to mark the golden jubilee of Bangladesh’s independence, he added.
The programme concluded with the screening of a documentary on the 1952 language movement.
Earlier in the morning, the ambassador hoisted the national flag at the Bangladesh MHM School and College in Doha. Counsellors Dr Md Mustafizur Rahaman, Md Nazmul Hassan and Md Mahbur Rahman, first secretary Tanmoy Islam, school director Md Anwar Khurshid, principal Md Jashim Uddin and teachers were present.
