The Qatar International Centre for Conciliation and Arbitration (Qicca) at Qatar Chamber has issued 77 arbitration awards and 11 mediation cases between 2018 and 2020.
This was announced by Qicca board member for International Relations Sheikh Dr Thani bin Ali al-Thani during a webinar organised recently by the Kuwaiti Arbitration Association, and was presided over by the association’s board member for international relations, Ghada al-Mujalham, with the aim to introducing the roles and objectives of Qicca.
During the webinar, Sheikh Thani said the State of Qatar is witnessing growth in the arbitration field, especially with the issuance of the Civil and Commercial Arbitration Law.
He noted that alternative means for solving disputes, such as arbitration and mediation, have become “the best option” in settling commercial disputes, especially in light of the mega projects being implemented for the development of Qatar’s infrastructure and for the preparations to host the 2022 FIFA World Cup.
Sheikh Thani also said companies in GCC states benefit from the various options of arbitration, whether through national arbitration centres, the GCC Arbitration Centre, or ICC Arbitration Court.
Asked about Qicca’s timeframe in resolving a dispute, Sheikh Thani said this depends on the cooperation between parties, stating that it takes six months to a maximum of one year.
According to Sheikh Thani, Qicca signed 16 agreements with GCC, Arab, and foreign arbitration centres, adding that due to Covid-19, the centre has utilised electronic arbitration. The centre has received many requests for online arbitration and it issued 20 arbitration awards during the pandemic.
Outlining the roles played by Qicca, Sheikh Thani said it plays several roles in promoting the arbitration culture among companies in Qatar and in organising introductory seminars and conferences on arbitration, as well as in the preparation of arbitrators and the conduct of training programmes for law students at Qatar University.
Sheikh Thani invited participants of the webinar and legal researchers to participate in the upcoming publication of Qatar Chamber’s Al Moltaqa Magazine, which will be a special issue for arbitration and includes articles and materials relating to arbitration, trade, investment, and contacts.
