Gulf Times editor-in-chief Faisal Abdul Hameed al-Mudahka, was honoured by Qatar Media Corporation CEO HE Sheikh Abdulrahman bin Hamad al-Thani, as Gulf Times team excelled in the awareness campaign to combat Covid-19 pandemic since its outbreak.
The awareness campaign across different media platforms in print, audio, digital and radio reached citizens and residents in different languages: English, Hindi, Filipino, Bengali and Urdu. Videos were produced in various languages, in co-operation with Radio Olive (Hindi) 106.3 FM and Radio Suno (Malayalam) 91.7 FM, Kabayan Radio (Filipino) 94.3 FM, Malayalam Radio 98.6 FM, Urdu 107 FM Radio, Golfo Radio 98.3 FM and Dotspace company, ensuring to reach all targeted groups rapidly.
In this regard, a study conducted by two university professors in Qatar showed how important messages regarding Covid-19 were effectively disseminated in the languages of expatriates. The study was carried out by Dr Rizwan Ahmad, associate professor of Sociolinguistics in Department of English Literature & Linguistics at Qatar University, and Dr Sara Hillman, assistant professor of English in Liberal Arts Programme at Texas A&M University at Qatar.
As migrant workers faced high rates of infection during the early stages of the pandemic, Qatar’s multilingual campaign, alongside Covid-19 preventive and precautionary measures at workers’ accommodations and project sites, helped contain the spread of the virus, they found.
Efforts are still ongoing to spread awareness among different members of the society to combat Covid-19 pandemic.
