Qatar is among the top 10 countries in the world to live in and work for expatriates, according to the HSBC Expat Explorer Survey 2020.
The Arabian Gulf country has ranked sixth globally and first in the Middle East in the index. It is also one of only two Asian countries to feature in the top 10, with Singapore ranking second globally.
The top 10 are as follows: Switzerland, Singapore, New Zealand, Germany, Spain, Qatar, the Netherlands, Australia, Canada and Ireland.
Every year, the HSBC Expat league table survey, described as "the longest running expat survey of its kind", collects the opinions of thousands of people around the world who have relocated; 2020 marked the 13th edition of the survey.
"Developing at breakneck speed, the country has steadily risen from the sands like a glittering behemoth and continues to attract foreign professionals from all walks of life," the HSBC Expat Country Guide says in its overview of Qatar.
"Doha is a hive of commercial activity that is certainly making the world sit up and take notice," it states. "Once home to a pearl industry, Qatar has since managed to blossom in its arid surroundings on the back of gas and oil, emerging as a powerful global player and boasting one of the highest incomes per capita in the world.
"With mushrooming cities, Qatar now employs expats not only in its renowned energy sector, but also in IT, construction, business and tourism. More and more expats are incentivised to work in Qatar, saving money in the tax-free environment while enjoying an excellent standard of living."
