The Qur’anic Botanic Garden (QBG), the first garden in the world to exhibit all 60 plant species mentioned in the Holy Qur’an, Hadith, and Sunnah, recently planted 100 trees with the Qatar Chapters of the Philippine Institute of Civil Engineers (PICE) and Filipino Planning Engineers Association (FPEA) as part of its annual Ghars campaign.
The event highlights QBG’s vital role in the environmental restoration and conservation of the country’s natural habitats and its bid to provide the expertise and tools required to every member of the community to become active contributors to Qatar’s sustainable development and the environmental pillar of Qatar National Vision 2030.
As part of the ceremony, QBG, PICE, and FPEA community members planted 100 Sidra, Samra, Ghaf and Awsaj trees at the Education City.
The ceremony adhered to social distancing regulations.
The tree planting event is part of QBG’s Ghars campaign, which aims to plant 2,022 trees in the lead-up to the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022.
The campaign is well on track to successfully complete this challenge with the latest number of trees planted by QBG now standing at 1993, following the event.
The Ghars campaign was launched in 2011 and is derived from the Arabic translation of ‘planting’ from a Hadith narrated by Anas bin Malik.
It aims to encourage members of the community to practice agriculture and tree planting, as well as raise environmental awareness and protection in the face of climate change and desertification.
Commenting on the event, Fatima al-Khulaifi, QBG director, said: “QBG has a long-standing relationship with both the PICE and FPEA, and we are delighted to partner with them once again to make valuable contributions to Qatar’s sustainable development and increase its green spaces.
"We sincerely look forward to collaborating on similar initiatives in the future.”
Sheila Medel, 2020 PICE Qatar Chapter president, said: “Planting trees is like planting your hope for the future. PICE Qatar is not only focused on the advancement of our members but the promotion of social responsibility of each individual to have a balanced life.
"Part of that is the tree-planting activity, which we have been holding for five years at Qatar Foundation. We are so excited and proud to have planted and left our mark on the endemic species of trees that QBG has spared for us to grow.”
Shielu Manantan, secretary FPEA, said: “Our aim to plant trees is partnered with the hope of a cleaner and a greener environment, a hope that each grown tree casts a shadow, where future generations can comfortably rest.‘Keep on planning, keep on planting’ is the phrase that guides us."
Additionally, in a bid to support the Environmental Development pillar of QNV 2030, protect ecosystems, and empower community members to be active contributors to these efforts, QBG recently launched its free-of-charge ‘Home Garden Phone Helpline’.
The initiative enables the public to pose any home gardening questions directly to QBG experts by calling +974 3091 8519 every Monday from 9am – 12:30pm, and every Wednesday from 12:30pm – 2:30pm.
QBG is a member of Qatar Foundation.
