The decorative lighting poles to be installed by the Public Works Authority (Ashghal) in the Doha Corniche and Central Doha areas will highlight the Qatari identity while adding beauty elements to the two areas.

In view of the special identity of the Doha Corniche and its location along the waterfront connecting the eastern coastal regions, it was decided to provide decorative lighting poles designed exclusively to highlight its identity connected to the local community, Ashghal said in a statement on Thursday.

Considering the presence of palm trees along the Corniche, Lightning Design Company (LDC) chairman Ahmed al-Abdullah put forward the idea of the palm fronds in co-operation with Arab Engineering Bureau chief executive Ibrahim al-Jaida.

The LDC developed the palm frond design of the lighting units.

The manufacture and supply of materials have been assigned to local firms, which include Metalex for the supply of steel poles and bolts, and Alurays Lighting Technology to supply lighting units to decorate Corniche Street with the palm frond design, the triangular shape of palm trunks, and random length of their leaves, the statement notes.

The brightness and visibility of these designs at night were also considered, and special lighting has been provided accordingly.

These lighting poles will feature an artistic work giving a distinct shape to the Doha waterfront.

For this, 1,440 poles will be installed and distributed along the middle and sides of the street, extending from Ras Bu Abboud Bridge to the signal near the Doha Exhibition and Convention Centre and the Sheraton Doha.

For Central Doha areas, lighting poles designed in the form of leaves will be installed by Al Nasr Holding Company.

The supply of materials has been assigned to local factories, including Qalex, Metro Smart International, and Jets Projects, to provide aluminium poles, baseline bolts, aluminium lighting provisions, and street light modules.

The leaf-shaped design has been chosen to complement the other traditional beautification works and the Qatari identity.

A total of 1,160 poles would be installed on Central Doha streets, such as the Grand Hamad Street, the Jabor bin Mohamed Street, the A-Ring Road, the Museum Street, and neighbouring roads connecting to the Doha Corniche.
