HE the Permanent Representative of Qatar to the United Nations Ambassador Sheikha Alya Ahmed bin Saif al-Thani and Permanent Representative of Poland Ambassador Joanna Wronecka, as the co-chairs of this process during the 75th session of the United Nations General Assembly, chaired the first round of the intergovernmental negotiations on the issue of equitable United Nations Security Council (UNSC) representation, increasing the number of its members and other issues related to the Security Council.

The first round, that lasted for two days, concentrated on the regional representation issue, while the member states and the regional groups and blocs concerned with the issue of Security Council reform reviewed their points of view regarding the Council reform.

In her speech that opened the negotiation session, Ambassador Sheikha Alya expressed her aspiration to comprehensively advance the reform process led by member states in accordance with the relevant UN General Assembly resolutions.

"Meaningful progress requires real and open dialogue, active participation, and work together to find areas for agreement," she said, affirming on the importance and historicity of this moment in the overall process of reforming the United Nations Security Council.

The first round of negotiations comes within the framework of a series of meetings to be held by the co-chairs this year, in which they review the five main issues agreed to be discussed within the framework of the Security Council reform process. They are the categories of membership in the council, the veto, the regional representation, the size of the enlarged board, the working methods of the council and the relation between the council and the General Assembly.

President of the 75th Session of the United Nations General Assembly Volkan Bozkir decided to appoint the Permanent Representatives of Qatar and Poland to chair the intergovernmental negotiations on Security Council reform.
