While continuing the ‘Qatar Beautification and our Kids Planting Trees’ campaign, trees were planted by kids at Al Thumama as part of the E-Ring Road Project. The event was organised by the Supervisory Committee of Beautification of Roads and Public Places in Qatar at the Public Works Authority (Ashghal) in co-ordination with the Ministry of Municipality and Environment (MME).
While attending the function, Fatima al-Kuwari, Central Municipal Committee (CMC) Member-Constituency 9 lauded the continuation of the campaign despite Covid-19 challenges. “The presence of the children makes us happy as we can educate them about the role of afforestation,” she said. The campaign, launched in September 2019, aims to afforest various areas while continuing until the end of 2021. According to figures with Ashghal, more than 360,000 trees have been so far. The Supervisory Committee of Beautification of Roads and Public Places in Qatar is implementing Qatar Beautification and Our Kids Planting Trees campaign. The committee works under the Ministry of Municipality and Environment (MME), in co-ordination with several ministries and other entities such as the Ministry of Transport and Communications, Ministry of Culture and Sports, Qatar Museums Authority, Qatar Rail, Private Engineering Office among others.
The committee is responsible for five major tasks including the construction of central public parks, provision of dedicated lanes for pedestrians and bicycles, development of the Doha Corniche and Central Doha and increasing afforestation and green areas. The committee’s work will enhance sustainability through minimising environmental pollution and reducing the emission of CO2 through reduced consumption of energy resources.
It also focuses on the provision of more public transport options aiming at reduced use of private cars and improving lifestyle through clean and safe transportation. It’s also intended to ensure a healthy environment within residential neighbourhoods and places of public gatherings through increased afforestation and landscaping, which will greatly help in reducing the temperature in cities.
