Qatar has a modern radar system, 'Shield of the Nation', to protect the coasts and territorial waters, Lt Faisal Hassan al-Jaidi, officer of the Eastern Region Section at the General Department of Coast and Border Security, told Qatar Radio in an interview, local Arabic daily Arrayah reported.
Qatar owns long-range boats that allow the department to secure the entire maritime territory of the country, he stated while explaining that the air reconnaissance section conducts routine patrols on the coasts and islands and participate in search and rescue operations.
Lt al-Jaidi highlighted the department's efforts during the Covid-19 pandemic, by monitoring compliance with the decisions of the Supreme Committee for Crisis Management. The capacity of boats stand halved as a precautionary measure. Random patrols ensure that seafarers abide by these decisions.
He stressed the need for sea-goers to have security and safety equipment, be aware of the meteorological reports, and inform the department about the cruise and contact numbers so that they can be used in the event of an emergency.
“Boats must stay away from hotels and private properties located on the sea coast by at least 500m,” he said. The department may stop boats in the event of unstable weather for the safety of sea-goers.
“In the event of encountering any problems at sea, seafarers must contact the department's operations room so that we send the closest patrol to them.”
Lt al-Jaidi concluded by demanding that users of water scooters and jet skis must wear a life jacket to protect themselves in the event of accidents, and that they must not use the marine vehicles in swimming areas.
