QNA/Doha
The Ministry of Municipality and Environment (MME) signed a 10-year contract Tuesday for the establishment and operation of a self-storage container city project in the Bojoud area on Al Majd Road opposite Birkat Al Awamer with Continental Commercial Company, in the presence of HE the Minister of Municipality and Environment Abdullah bin Abdulaziz bin Turki al-Subaie.
The container city is expected to be operational in the first half of 2021. The aim is to provide logistical services related to distribution, storage and compensation for violating stores that are to be removed from farms and unqualified areas; using government lands to provide areas for storing camping equipment, bicycles, and machinery; to ensure that hygiene requirements are not violated after the end of the camping season and related equipment is not left in residential neighbourhoods or open lands; and achieving a return on investment return and providing a distinctive service that can be developed in the future in line with the emerging requirements.
The project includes buildings for workers and observation, paved roads, a fuel station, a loading and unloading area, docks, a renewable energy generation plant, a service and maintenance centre, and space for future expansion.
MME's Technical Office manager Tariq Juma al-Tamimi explained there is a general tendency within the ministry to involve the private sector in its projects to achieve the highest possible benefit to society while encouraging and opening investment fields.
"The MME faces great challenges in terms of random storage, whether on farms or with small and medium-sized companies, as well as at the level of individuals, so it has resorted to this project to avoid violations and fires and to establish a systematic model that provides alternatives," he explained.
Continental Trading Company board member Ahmed Sultan al-Kuwari affirmed that the Self-Storage Container City Project provides an excellent service to all citizens and residents, especially as it includes spaces for storing camping equipment and machinery instead of placing them in homes or companies, farms and open lands.
He explained that the project will include all features that are of interest to individuals and container companies in the areas of storage and distribution and prices that suit everyone.
