The exemption of Qataris and children of Qatari mothers from tuition fees at the College of the North Atlantic-Qatar (CNA-Q) from the winter term 2021 has contributed to an increase in Qatari applicants by about 140%, acting president Dr Salem al-Naemi told local Arabic daily 'Arrayah'.
"After the fees exemption decision was announced by the college’s board of trustees, in line with Qatar National Vision 2030, the number of Qatari applicants surged from 91 to 214," he explained. “We have witnessed a great turnout and expect the numbers to increase further in the coming quarter,” he said.
Dr al-Naemi observed that Qatari families welcomed the decision together with former graduates who wanted to complete higher education in their college, and the industrial sector in the country who are keen to develop their employees.
“A total of 2,031 male and female students applied for the winter term 2021 and 975 have been accepted according to the criteria for each programme. The applied bachelor's programmes have witnessed a large turnout of students. Medical radiography, maintenance engineering technology, and human resource management programmes were the most popular among the students enrolled in the winter term."
CNA-Q is scheduled to be transformed into a national university once the Council of Ministers approve the draft law, Dr al-Naemi pointed out.
The transfer to a university of applied studies will give Qatari students confidence that their future will be in a national university and to get a bachelor’s degree in one of the technical and applied disciplines. He stressed “that preparing a comprehensive transformation plan is underway, and the transfer is expected to be announced in the fall of 2021.”
Dr al-Naemi assured that the transformation will not cancel the diploma programmes, which will continue because they meet the market needs. All diploma graduates will have the opportunity to complete their university studies to obtain a bachelor’s degree with the same university, as well as to continue studying at many universities in Canada, the UK, and other countries.
“The college has launched a new call centre to better serve students, and established an Entrepreneurs Centre to be a gateway to transform students into developers of ideas and future entrepreneurs, and by helping and training them to transform ideas into job opportunities.”
