Qatar and the UK on Tuesday held the first meeting of the joint committee to combat terrorism, the Ministry of Interior (MoI) announced. In the virtual meeting, the Qatari delegation was headed by Maj Gen Abdul Aziz Abdullah al-Ansari, director, International Co-operation Department at MoI and head of the National Counter-Terrorism Committee while the British side was headed by Jon Wilks, UK ambassador to Qatar.
The meeting discussed ways to enhance co-operation through activating the letter of intent signed between the two sides, preparations for the 2022 FIFA World Cup along with steps to combat terrorist financing. Qatar’s preparations for the evaluation of the Financial Action Task Force (FATF) were also on the list.
The meeting also discussed aviation and maritime security along with threat and risk management and other related topics that enhance the counter-terrorism working group's role. Maj Gen al-Ansari said the dialogue was successful by all standards and many recommendations were given. “A plan has been developed to follow up on implementing the points discussed by the competent authorities in the two countries within the framework of exchanging information and experiences,” he added.
