The Qatar team bagged the ‘Outstanding Performance’ award at the Huawei Middle East ICT Competition 2020 – described as the largest competition for students and universities in the Middle East, it was announced.

Three students – Maria Rauf Mahsood, Zainab Ameema, and Khamarunnisa Pazhayakath – along with other winning teams, received special certificates and trophies virtually from local Huawei representatives.

Qatar University also won the ‘Excellent Academy’ award at the competition, which announced its winners recently, following months of national and regional contests between some of the region’s brightest young minds and leading academic institutions.

The finals, held virtually this year in respect of social distancing measures, saw 13 teams of talented students compete from 10 countries, including the team from Qatar.

The annual event sees Huawei and various partners in government, and academia contribute towards the development of ICT talent ecosystems.

The competition nurtures young talent while also fostering an innovation mindset amongst the next generation of ICT leaders. In 2020, it witnessed the participation of 20 ministries and government authorities, and received 15,000 entries from 440 local colleges and universities in 10 Middle East countries.

“On behalf of Huawei, I offer hearty congratulations to our winners and everyone who participated in this year’s competition. This has been an exceptional year in many ways but it has also never been a more important time to support young people in developing their talent and creativity with cutting-edge technology,” Huawei Middle East president Charles Yang said in a press statement.

The ICT Competition witnessed the participation of more than 60,000 students in four years.
