The 53rd Engineers’ Day was recently celebrated by Institute of Engineers India (IEI) Qatar chapter to commemorate the birth anniversary of the legendary engineer Bharat Ratna Sir Mokshagundam Visvesvaraya, at Liverpool John Moores University Qatar.
This year, owing to Covid-19 pandemic, the event was conducted in hybrid mode for the first time since 1990. Guests and executive committee members joined in person at the venue, with over 500 members and engineers from Qatar, India, and other parts of the world joining in via Zoom.
Abdul Sathar, chairman of IEI Qatar chapter, welcomed the delegates and opened the proceedings with an inspiring address. Dr Deepak Mittal, ambassador of India to Qatar, was the chief guest. He is also the patron of IEI Qatar chapter. Dr Mittal lauded the contribution of the Indian community in Qatar, including its engineers, towards strengthening and furthering the friendly relations between the two countries. He commended the efforts of IEI Qatar chapter in bringing together the engineering community.
Prof K K Aggarwal, chairman of National Board of Accreditation India, was also a chief guest. He highlighted the efforts of IEI Qatar chapter as a high performing chapter of the organisation and also complimented the Government of Qatar for supporting the cause of the engineering profession in a big way.
Guest of honour Padma Shri Dr Mylswamy Annadurai is fondly known as Moon Man of India for having led various prestigious Indian space exploration missions like Chandrayaan 1, Mangalyaan, and Chandrayaan 2. He described how India was successful in its maiden Moon and Mars exploration programmes at a fraction of the cost of other international undertakings.
Jassim Ahmed al-Jolo, president of Arab Engineers Forum, was another guest of honour. He applauded the contribution of Indian engineers towards Qatar’s national vision. Guest of honour Sunitha Shyam, CEO and founding partner of Veritadyne Strategic Consulting, delivered the keynote address on the occasion with the theme of “Engineers for a Self-Resilient India”.
Other guests of honour were Nasser Jeham al-Kuwari, former CEO of Qatar Chemicals and Qatar Fuel Additives Company; Dr Abdulla al-Sayed, president of Lean Construction Institute Qatar; Dr T M Gunanraja, chairman of World Federation of Engineering Organisation – CIC; Dr Homaid Abdulla al-Madfaa, chairman, board of directors of OUC Liverpool John Moores University Qatar; and Azmy Ameer, president and executive director of OUC Liverpool John Moores University Qatar.
