The Roads Projects Department at the Public Works Authority (Ashghal) developed several roads across the country helping the authority mark remarkable achievements in 2020. According to information, received from the authority, Ashghal completed the upgrading works of Al-Rufaa Intersection (known as Sana Intersection) in August. The signal was opened for traffic improving the intersection’s vehicular capacity and reducing the congestion and linking some of the major vital roads in Doha such as Ras Abu Abboud Street, Ali bin Omar Al- Attiya Street as well Ahmed bin Mohamed bin Thani Street and B-Ring Roads. The intersection serves densely populated surrounding residential areas such as Umm Ghuwailina, Al Hitmi, Old Al-Ghanim and Al Doha Al Jadeeda and enhances traffic flow at these dense areas and ensure easy access to Hamad International Airport, National Museum of Qatar, health and educational facilities, commercial centres and hotels.

Development works on the road and the intersection within the Road Improvement Works in Al Rayyan Area - Phase 5 Project was also completed last year. The development here facilitates access to the Al-Sailiya Central Market and it comes as part of Ashghal’s plan to improve the efficiency of the existing junctions and local road network.

Also, Ashghal completed works of the roads and infrastructure works for the 31,000-person capacity Integrated Workers Complex (IWAC) in West Umm Slal (Bu Garn). Ashghal also opened the roads in the area to traffic. The project serves the needs of the workers’ accommodation and the logistic city in the area and connects them with the existing road network.

In May, Ashghal opened 0.6 km of Al Nasr Street and 1.8 km of Al Mirqab Al Jadeed Street in addition to four signalised intersections to traffic as part of the ‘Improvement of Main Roads in Al Nasr Area’ project linking the two streets with Suhaim Bin Hamad Street (C-Ring Road) and Doha Expressway, two of the most vital roads in Doha and serving a large number of daily commuters. Also, in the same month, Ashghal completed the construction of the roads surrounding the recently-opened Umm Al Juwashin Petrol Station, located on the intersection of Al-Majd Road with Dukhan Road and between Umm Al Juwashin and Umm Al Afaei Interchanges providing safe access to the petrol station’s users.

2020 also witnessed the start of the development of some streets in the West Bay area with the aim of increasing their capacity to absorb the traffic movement in the area and reduce congestion. Main upgrading works on 1.2km of Al Jazira Al Arabiya Street along the construction of service roads were also completed while Ashghal announced the completion of the main works to develop Al Tarfa Interchange and construction of new service streets. Muaither Sports Club roundabout and Plastic roundabout on Al Sailiya Road were converted signaled intersections. This is in addition to the implementation of the development works for the adjacent 6 km road 6 km and the construction of service roads.
Main development works of Umm Al-Dome Street, Al-Muaither Street and Al-Annabi Street in addition to three new signalised intersections were also completed. Ashghal started development works at Al-Sadd Interchange with the aim of expanding the signal and developing its infrastructure services in addition to the development of Al-Sadd and Joaan streets.
