Al Jeryan Stud’s Al Lusail stayed unbeaten this season, completing a hat-trick of wins after landing the Halul Island Cup, yesterday’s feature on turf for local Thoroughbreds at Qatar Racing and Equestrian Club’s Al Rayyan Park.
Hadi Nasser al-Ramzani’s ward has now won the 2400m feature for the second straight year, with Ronan Thomas guiding the six-year-old to a victory by a length-and-a-half in front of Marco Casamento-ridden Abu Samrah.
The Al Jeryan colours tasted victory earlier too after Rodess Du Loup won the Purebred Arabian Conditions event under Alberto Sanna.
The feature win was Thomas’ third victory yesterday, having combined with trainer Alban de Mieulle to guide two Umm Qarn horses to wins.
First up was Umm Bab, who finally shed his maiden status, having hit the frame twice earlier this season under Thomas. The four-year-old colt won comfortably with one-and-a-half lengths to spare in the mile-long run for Arabians.
In the handicap race for local Arabians, Thomas was astride Abahat and the duo won the seven-furlong run in fine fashion with a length-and-a-quarter to spare.
Jockey Michael Forest celebrated his first win in Qatar astride Zakhir Racing’s Mualah in thrilling fashion. A scintillating turn of foot on the home stretch saw Zuhair Mohsen-trained mare land the penultimate race of the day, a 2000m Class 2 run for Thoroughbred fillies and mares, ahead of Thomas-ridden Festive.
Trainer Julian Smart had a winner in Off He Goes, who has not finished outside the money since November 2018. Ridden by Tomas Lukasek in the famous royal blue and white stars silks of His Highness Sheikh Mohamed bin Khalifa al-Thani, the gelding followed up his Group 3 win in January with a 2200m cosy handicap win yesterday.
Ibrahim al-Malki-trained Al Adheed made light work of the extra weight as Soufiane Saadi, in the silks of Abdulatif Hussain al-Emadi, gave the horse a fantastic ride to victory in the Local Thoroughbred Handicap run for horses rated 85 and below. The victory yesterday with three-quarters-of-a-length to spare completed a hat-trick for Al Adheed.
Earlier in the evening, the Qatari apprentice jockey Saleh Salem al-Marri guided Mansoor Khali al-Mansoori-trained Ghalaad to the winner’s enclosure for the first time since November 2017 after landing the Purebred Arabian Claiming Race by half-a-length.
The apprentice rider now has more wins (12) this season than he had cumulatively coming into the term.
The nine-race card opened with Bader al-Balushi-trained Hakeem, who too had a weight advantage, taking the Thoroughbred Handicap run for horses rated 80 and below under Killian Leonard.
