A high-profile Qatari delegation comprising former and current athletes, sports administrators and journalists reached Oman on Friday to support Doha’s bid to host the Asian Games in 2030.
The Olympic Council of Asia (OCA) is to announce the winning city at its General Assembly on December 16 in Muscat, which is playing host to several meetings in the run-up to the vote on Wednesday.
Doha, where the continental multi-sport gala was held in 2006, is hoping to host the Games for the second time and is competing with Riyadh this time.
“We have a busy schedule in Muscat where we will be holding several meetings discussing important issues relating to sports and promoting Doha’s bid,” a member of the delegation said yesterday.
Qatar, the 2022 FIFA World Cup hosts, has almost all infrastructure in place for the 2030 event, with operational costs comprising the bulk of the expenditure needed for the Games
Doha 2030 CEO and Qatar Olympic Committee Secretary General Jassim al-Buenain has said that “providing athletes with a safe and world-class environment to compete is always our first priority.”
Qatar continues to lead the way as the safest country in the world, topping the Numbeo crime index for five years in a row now.
Qatar's ability to maintain its position as the safest Arab country in the region and worldwide for another year, reflects the constant and outstanding level of security and safety enjoyed by the country.
Al-Buenain said recently that if Doha is elected to host in 2030, high-level safety protocols and state-of the-art sporting facilities will be offered to the participating countries.
“If Doha has the honour of hosting the 2030 Asian Games, our state-of-the-art venues will provide a gateway to certainty for the OCA family and for Asia’s athletes that they can expect the very best conditions,” he said.
“We have proven ourselves reliable partners and we are ready to put our experience and expertise to the benefit of Asian sport.”
Qatar is promoting the Doha 2030 bid as “Your Gateway to a Brighter Future for Asian Sport”.
