Abdullah al-Saai, Director of the Competitions Department at the Local Organising Committee (LOC) of the AFC Asian Champions League, East Zone matches, said Qatar has once again provided the ‘best conditions’ for teams at all four match venues. “Following the announcement that Qatar would host the East Zone matches, there was a timeline to provide everything that would contribute to the success of the championship. However, slick preparation from the LOC helped us in providing great conditions to host matches,” al-Saai said in an interview with QFA website. “We provided the highest match standards to ensure the success of the AFC Champions League for West Zone matches also,” he added.
He said the presence of this large number of teams meant that the LOC had to keep ready four stadiums with state-of-the-art cooling technology and the final selection of the four venues was made in coordination with the AFC. He said attendance and field follow-ups are vital in tackling every matter at venues before the teams arrive for matches or training. “Such events undoubtedly refine and develop young people, and also, it helps us gain experience. The young cadres we see have the capacity to organize such matches, and some of them have diplomas in their respective fields,” al-Saai said. “We have professionally run management teams in all stadiums,” he added.
Regarding co-ordination with the AFC, al-Saai said he met with the AFC delegation before the tournament began and meetings are held daily during the competition. “Coordination with the AFC continues daily,” al-Saai reiterated.
When asked about the AFC Champions League, West Zone matches, al-Saai said Qatar LOC members gained a lot. “What we did during the AFC Champions League, West Zone matches was the subject of admiration and respect from those visiting the country in September and October,” al-Saai said.
“We had great teamwork, and we managed all tasks well. We benefited a lot from working in most trying circumstances. That event gave us the confidence that we could do work in any situation,” he added.
“We have a big team handling all matters at every venue. And remember all the people working at the stadiums know we are operating in the times of Covid-19. We are extra vigilant, and we know that top-notch professionalism is needed to get work done,” al-Saai said.
He pointed out that dealing with what the current crisis requires implementing the approved medical protocols when it comes to teams, referees, administrators and LOC members. “We are strictly implementing the medical protocols at match stadiums, training venues and hotels,” al-Saai said.
He stressed that everyone is ready to deliver another tremendous continental event through hard work. He said completing the championship remains at the core of LOC’s work methods that are being implemented daily. “Timely coordination between workers of LOC and with members of the AFC delegates are key to quick and accurate solutions to any problems we may face,” al-Saai said.
