A Qatar University (QU) academic has contributed to three international meetings, it was announced on Sunday. Dr Derek Stewart is the manager of Academic Quality Assurance at Vice President for Medical and Health Sciences Office QU and Professor of Clinical Pharmacy and Practice at the QU College of Pharmacy.
At the start of September, Dr Stewart gave a talk at the National University of Singapore on the potential for pharmacists to be trained to prescribe medicines. While in Scotland, he led a major research group focusing on the education and practice of pharmacist prescribers, culminating in over 40 published papers. This initiative is supported by the Scottish Government in an attempt to improve the quality of patient care, to optimise the use of highly trained health professionals and to reduce physician workload. As part of the presentation, he highlighted recently published research from Qatar exploring the clinical activities of pharmacists and the potential to expand their input to patient care.
Later in September, Dr Stewart was part of an international research “writing challenge” which aims to encourage researchers to progress and publish their research in high quality academic journals. The challenge is supported through a number of webinars and events involving high profile, internationally renowned speakers with particular expertise in publishing.
At the start of November, he participated as a speaker in a Pharmacy Practice Research Showcase of the International Pharmaceutical Federation (FIP). Speakers were from Canada, Australia, China and Qatar.
Commenting on his involvement in these events, Dr Stewart said: “I am delighted to have been invited to contribute to these events, which provided an opportunity to showcase the contribution of Qatar University to the global pharmacy arena and to influence clinical pharmacy practice, education and research.”
Dr Stewart joined Qatar University in April 2019 from Scotland where he was Professor of Pharmacy Practice at Robert Gordon University in Aberdeen. He has published almost 200 research and education papers, and has collaborated with individuals at Qatar University and Hamad Medical Corporation for over ten years.
