The Public Works Authority (Ashghal) has announced that traffic movement at the Nuaija (The Mall) Intersection will change, and one lane heading towards the south and north will be removed for a period of six months, starting tomorrow.
This will be done to facilitate works at the intersection, the authority said on Twitter yesterday.
The announcement comes as Ashghal has said it will start improvement works at Nuaija Intersection on D-Ring Road, which include increasing the number of lanes to four in each direction instead of three.
This will help raise traffic capacity and reduce traffic congestion, the authority noted.
The Nuaija Intersection is located within the scope of the D-Ring Road Upgrade Project, which includes the development of Fereej Al Ali Intersection (Al Tadamon), Nuaija Intersection (The Mall) and the intersection known as LuLu Intersection.
Upon completion of works at the junction, there will be enhanced traffic movement on both Najma Street and D-Ring Road, and it will also facilitate access to Al Hilal, Old Airport, Nuaija, Al Thumama and E-Ring Road. Improvement works on D-Ring Road also include developing rainwater drainage networks to raise the efficiency of drainage networks in the area, by constructing a tunnel to drain rainwater with a total length of about 3.5km.
The project also involves the implementation of a shared pedestrian and cycling paths along the 4.5km D-Ring Road on both sides in addition to afforestation works throughout the project.
As part of the project, the LuLu Intersection will be improved by allowing free-flowing traffic coming from Airport Road towards Fereej Al Ali Intersection along D-Ring Road, while keeping the traffic light in the opposite direction.
An underpass with three lanes in each direction will be constructed at Fereej Al Ali Intersection to provide free-flowing traffic on D-Ring Road.
The existing signalised junction will be improved by increasing the number of lanes from three to four in each direction at the intersection with Al Montazah Street, which will significantly increase traffic capacity at the intersection and provide free-flowing traffic.
Closures necessitated by the D-Ring Road project are being implemented by Ashghal in co-ordination with the General Directorate of Traffic.
