The Public Works Authority (Ashghal) has announced the commencement of upgrade works on Al Wukair Road, as part of the Interim Road Improvement in South of Doha Area - Phase 2.
These works aim to upgrade Al Wukair Road, over a length of 2km, and converting two roundabouts into signalised intersections as well as to develop infrastructure utilities’ services, Ashghal has said in a statement.
Monira al-Mohannadi, project engineer in the Roads Projects Department at Ashghal, emphasised the importance of the project and its significant location, especially as it includes the upgrade of the roundabouts known as the Health Centre Roundabout and Al Wakra Hospital Roundabout, which are two of the most congested roundabouts in the area.
Both roundabouts along with Al Wukair Road serve many service facilities, shops, commercial centres and educational and health institutions.
Further to converting the two existing roundabouts into signalised intersections to improve the traffic flow in the area, the project’s scope will include road developments in both directions of Al Wukair Road at a total length of 2km, providing 4km of pedestrian walkways and upgrading street lighting systems.
It will also improve infrastructure utilities in the area, such as upgrading the treated sewage effluent (TSE) network and surface water drainage network, and provide protection for the existing power lines and telecommunications cables.
The project will be implemented by Al-Mohannadi for Roads Trading & Contracting under the supervision of Gulf Engineering & Industrial Consultancy Construction. The works are scheduled to be fully completed in the first quarter of 2022, the statement added.
These works are part of Ashghal's efforts to improve the existing services and utilities and to upgrade the road network in several areas in the country, to cope with the national economic development and social growth requirements in Qatar.
