The Public Works Authority (Ashghal) has announced the completion of the main upgrading works at Bu Sidra Roundabout.
In a press statement on Sunday, Ashghal said the works include converting the roundabout into a signalised intersection and carrying out infrastructure upgrade works.
The recently-developed signalised intersection is now open to traffic and the infrastructure works are now 80% complete, as part of the Road Improvements Works for Junctions & Roundabouts in Various Areas of Greater Doha, Phase 8.
Rashed al-Marri, project engineer in Ashghal’s Roads Projects Department’s West Area Section, highlighted the importance of upgrading the Bu Sidra Roundabout into a signalised intersection.
It links Al Waab Street, Al Sedaira Street, and Ras Laffan Street, along with enhancing traffic flow along Al Furousiya Street and Al Sailiya Road, which are characterised by heavy traffic movement.
The newly-upgraded intersection also serves several educational and health institutions, and facilitates access to establishments such as the Muaither Sports Club, the Barwa Al Sailiya Compound, the Aspire Zone Foundation, Villaggio, and Hyatt Plaza.
Al-Marri added that the new intersection also connects surrounding areas such as Fereej Al Manaseer, Bu Sidra, Muaither, Baaya, and Al Aziziyah.
He also said that the completion of the upgrading works at the intersection and the expansion of its lanes have significantly enhanced traffic flow and reduced congestion in the area, especially as the project is aimed at improving vehicular capacity at the intersection known as Bu Sidra Intersection.
The upgrade works included expanding the intersection and increasing the number of lanes on Al Sailiya Road from three to five lanes in each direction, and eventually to seven on completion of all the works.
On Al Sedaira Street and Ras Laffan Street, lanes will be increased from three to four lanes in each direction.
Al-Marri said that local materials and manufacturers were relied upon for most of the project works, in line with the Public Works Authority's support for local manufacturers and the Ta’heel initiative, which was launched in 2017.
Materials and elements supplied by local manufacturers included sewage, surface water and rainwater drainage pipes, and lighting poles and luminaires.
The local Qatar component now accounts for 80% of the project.
Further to converting the roundabout into a signalised intersection, the project’s scope of works will include the upgrade of 2km of roads and the provision of a new service road, in addition to the installation of a new lighting system for the service roads.
Once complete, the infrastructure services’ enhancement works will cover the upgrade of the surface and stormwater drainage system over a length of 3.4km, and provide a treated sewage effluent (TSE) network, and protecting electricity and telecommunications service lines.
The road will also have directional signs and markings.
To encourage a healthy lifestyle, the projects will feature pedestrian and cycle paths alongside Al Sailiya Road as well as landscaping works and planting of trees.
