Fighting between Azerbaijani and Armenian forces continued on Monday in the Nagorno-Karabakh region, despite the ceasefire agreement announced two days ago.

President of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev announced that his country's Army has liberated 13 villages of Jabrayil district in the Nagorno-Karabakh region.

The Armenian armed forces violated the agreed temporary humanitarian ceasefire, and the Azerbaijani residential settlements and battle positions were subjected to heavy artillery fire last night, President Ilham Aliyev said, according to (AZERTAC) news agency.

On the other hand, Armenian Defense Ministry spokesman Artsrun Hovhannisyan said that the Azeri forces launched a large-scale attack early this morning in the northern direction of the front line of battle in Nagorno-Karabakh, adding that the attack was preceded by intense artillery bombardment.

Two days ago, Azerbaijan and Armenia announced that they had agreed on a new ‘humanitarian truce’, which came into effect at midnight Saturday local time, to put an end to the bloody escalation in the Nagorno-Karabakh region.

The new truce comes a week after the two countries failed to fulfill a ceasefire agreement, accusing each other of violating the deal.

Armed clashes broke out on Sep. 27 on the line of contact between Azerbaijan and Armenia's forces in the Nagorno-Karabakh region and border areas. This is the most serious escalation between the two sides in more than 30 years. (QNA)
