Owned and bred by His Highness Sheikh Mohamed bin Khalifa al-Thani, the three-year-old gelding Big Five landed a second victory in the Prix Poggio Ricco (Classe 2) at Compiegne in France yesterday.
This staying type gelding sat in the last position during the race. When asked to accelerate by Pierre-Charles Boudot in the final 100m, he easily pulled clear to hammer home an impressive three and half-length victory in front of Mystical Land.
The winning trainer, Francis-Henri Graffard, said: “Pierre-Charles gave him a good ride. He has a lot of stamina, which was very helpful in this heavy ground. He’s a late maturing horse and we gave him time. He’s big but needed to strengthen, as he never stopped growing. I think he will change a lot this autumn. A good horse for the future.”
Bred by Al Shahania Stud, Big Five is a son of Frankel. His dam is the Group 3-placed Louvain. She has already produced two black type winners, including the champion Flotilla, winner of the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf (Group 1) and the Poule d’Essai des Pouliches (Group 1).
