Sarah Khan, advocate, activist, peace monger and speaker from Los Angeles, US, shared her views on the steps to impact, influence and inspire change during the third edition of ‘Ignite Possibilities’ series hosted by ICC Advanced Toastmasters Club (IATC).
The co-author of Sexy with No Boundaries, with Hidi Lee, Sarah has been featured in Forbes, Al Jazeera, Muslims of America and Toastmasters Magazine. Her ongoing work on engaging local communities in confronting Islamophobia and as an advocate for empathy has attracted invitations as a guest speaker at various venues including schools across Southern California, churches, synagogues, mosques, TEDx, Al Jazeera’s AJ+, Jubilee Project Media News Company and local newspapers.
Sarah in her stately way elaborated the six steps to be the catalyst one must ponder over. These steps include: start from the inside-out; be outward facing; dare to bare; release tension through laughter; transform conflicts; and reconcile differences.
“It’s not what you do or how you do it, but your why – what you believe – that impacts, influences and inspire change,” she said during her presentation. She added: “The most successful people in any field are always outward-facing. They focus on whom they serve rather than how they are being served.”
She elaborated on the principals like avoid-attack, timing, and rules of comedy. She also briefed about the benefits of inserting humour in conversation.
Sarah said: “To connect with people, one should focus on empathy and struggles as people connect with our struggles more than our success. Empathy has nothing to do with shared experience, it’s about shared emotions.”
‘Ignite Possibilities’ series takes place on the first Saturday of every month on Zoom at 7pm Qatar time. International speakers with their wealth of knowledge are scouted to enrich the attendees from the club, other toastmasters, professionals and anyone interested to increase their knowledge on a variety of topics.
