Qatar University’s Health (QU-H) continued with its Continuing Professional Development (CPD) initiatives with a webinar for healthcare professionals from across Qatar, which aimed at supporting educational and training needs in the area of research skills.
The recently held event welcomed more than 90 participants and represented the first of a six-part series in research skills that has been co-designed in partnership with experts from Hamad Medical Corporation (HMC).
The session focused on the first step in the research process - the study design and developing a research question. Further sessions will focus on other essential steps in the research process.
This CPD series intends to equip healthcare professionals with the necessary instruction to embark on their own research projects and expertise to interpret published studies, QU has said in a statement. The delivery of the series has been planned specifically at this time, when an increasing volume of health literature is being published on optimal patient care, especially during the Covid-19 pandemic.
It is essential that healthcare professionals can understand and utilise emerging evidence reported in published studies to deliver the best possible care for their patients, the statement notes.
Dr Zachariah Nazar, QU-H CPD co-ordinator, said: “The uncertainty of Covid-19 represents a real challenge for all healthcare professionals; there is new information emerging all the time, which affects the way we deliver healthcare. It is, therefore, essential that healthcare staff can read and understand the latest reported evidence and use it to benefit their patients.”
Dr Daniel Rainkie, clinical lecturer, College of Pharmacy at QU-H, presented at the event and suggested that following this CPD series, participants can use the skills they have acquired to seek opportunities to initiate their own research studies.
Participants from all health professions attended the interactive session, delivered by a panel of three experts from QU-H and HMC. This collaboration developed following strategic meetings held to identify the important learning needs of healthcare workers in Qatar. Subsequent work has been conducted to set up sub-committees made up of local experts to design and deliver specific training targeted to address the learning needs identified.
Prof Guillaume Alinier, director of Research at HMC's Ambulance Service, also presented during the session and said: “The healthcare system in Qatar employs international experts in every sector; it is imperative that we capitalise on this very valuable resource in developing initiatives such as this CPD series. We will all benefit from this collaboration - healthcare workers, educators and the public."
Dr Mujahed Shraim, assistant professor in Epidemiology at the College of Health Sciences, QU-H, was the third presenter on the topic of study designs and highlighted that “we made the webinar as interactive as possible for the audience using quizzes throughout our talks to help everyone assimilate the knowledge imparted.”
Further CPD series have been planned in collaboration with both health and educational institutes in Qatar and will be delivered over the coming months. QU-H has also extended its invitation for attendance to an international audience through offering open-access live-
streaming of these events on its YouTube channel.
