The main works of mooring berths at Al Wakra port have been completed with some of the parking lots set to go operational.
Jaber al-Suwaidi, Central Municipal Council (CMC) member from Constituency 20, told local Arabic daily Arrayah that the contractor has completed a
large part of the main works of the project, including construction of the service buildings and a number of parking lots for boats and cruisers.
A total of 436 lots will be available for private fishing boats and cruisers at Al Wakra port, where the berths are being constructed in line with the government’s strategy to develop the marine transport sector. They will, once completed, offer a suitable solution to provide parking facilities for boat owners.
The mooring berths are being constructed by using durable, sustainable and environment-friendly materials in order to preserve the environment and marine resources, in line with the docking requirements of such boats as well as their safety and protection from hazards in all circumstances.
“The expansion project was one of the main demands of fishermen,” said al-Suwaidi, expressing hope that the project, once completed, will bring an end to several boats and cruises gathering in one place - something that at times has led to collisions.
“There has been an increase in the number of fishing boats. The project will help the owners meet various requirements. It will also bring an end to the congestion of cruisers and fishing boats in the old parking lots,” al-Suwaidi said.
In 2018, the Ministry of Transport and Communications started building mooring facilities for private boats at the Al Wakra, Al Khor, Al Thakhira and Al Ruwais ports through direct co-ordination with the Ministry of Municipality and Environment’s Fisheries Department.
Al-Suwaidi said the berths are being constructed in accordance with the latest global standards and systems.
The goal is to provide some 1,000 mooring berths and regulate private boats' mooring operations in modern anchoring spaces. The berths will also keep boats safe from dangers such as storms and high waves, providing smoother movement and preserving people’s belongings. They will support the private sector in a way that helps boost Qatar’s economic development.
The project’s most important feature is the optimised use of the potential of Qatar’s harbours and establishments, aiming to reduce cost, observe environmental and sustainability standards and codes, and apply the world’s best practices in terms of project design and execution. The authorities have plans to increase the number of mooring berths in the future.
