The Qatar Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) has updated the working mechanisms of several Qatari meteorological centres, aiming for more accurate weather forecasting and detection of weather elements than what is currently available.
The move has come on directions from the Ministry of Transport and Communications (MoTC) within the framework of the sector's strategic plan for keeping up with latest advancements in meteorology, which has been playing a growing role in servicing more entities that benefit from weather and climate forecasting in the fields of manufacturing, agriculture, urbanisation, infrastructure works and air movement and navigation.

CAA recently set up an integrated, multi-functional weather station at the northernmost point of Qatar, Al Ruwais Port, according to a statement issued by the MoTC on social media. The new station takes measurements of all main atmospheric conditions such as temperature, humidity and pressure. It also measures wind speed and direction at two

different levels, 2m and 10m, in addition to measuring seawater salinity and temperature.
The new facility also plays the role of an agricultural station that measures soil temperature at various surfaces and depths ranging between zero and 100cm. It also measures soil moisture and water evaporation.
This new station, plus the Mukaynis Meteorological Centre, which is equipped with a weather radar that is the first of its kind in Qatar and the World Meteorological Organisation-recognised Gulf Marine Centre, fully cover Qatar and will issue weather advisories and forecasts to their beneficiaries, including researchers and parties concerned.
They play also a significant role in providing key services to FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022 establishments, the statement adds.
