Qatar, represented by the National Traffic Safety Committee (NTSC) at the Ministry of Interior (MoI), participated in the fourth meeting of the United Nations Road Safety Collaboration (UNRSC), held on September 24 through a video conference.
MoI yesterday informed through its social media accounts that Qatar was represented at the meeting by Brig Mohamed Abdullah al-Malki, NTSC secretary and representative of the country in UNRSC. The meeting discussed the adoption of a new resolution on global road safety by the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) taking UN sustainable development goals (SDGs) into account.
The meeting also discussed the call of member states and the international community to intensify national, regional and international co-operation and adhere to political responsibility at the highest possible level to improve road safety. The meeting witnessed the announcing of 2021-2030 as the second decade of action for road safety with the goal of reducing road traffic deaths and injuries by at least 50% by 2030.
The new resolution calls upon the member states to co-operate with other UNRSC partners and stakeholders and to work on preparing an action plan for the second decade as a guiding document to support the implementation of its objectives. It also asks the member states to consider establishing mechanisms for periodic vehicle evaluation in order to ensure that all new and used vehicles adhere to the basic vehicle safety regulations.
