Msheireb Museums, the cultural and tourist destination at Msheireb Downtown Doha, recently launched a competition targeting creative designers in Qatar.
Participants should submit a creative design to create a unique souvenir product that represents Msheireb Museums or Msheireb Downtown Doha, which can be showcased and sold in the Msheireb Museums gift shop.
The invitation is open to all designers, innovators, students and the general public aged 18 years and above who are residents of Qatar. The competition aims to inspire the creative youth, explore new talents and preserve the Qatari national heritage and legacy.
Dr Hafez Ali, director of Msheireb Museums, said: "Msheireb Museums enriches the creative landscape in Qatar, and this competition is an opportunity for designers to showcase their skills and innovations. The gift item, 'Sogha', is one of our core legacy components in Qatar and a critical item to promote Msheireb and Qatar's legacy among new generations. The winning designs will be displayed at our gift shop where visitors can see and buy them."
The submitted designs will be evaluated according to specific criteria, such as uniqueness and creativity of the design, as well as the use of Msheireb Museums and/or Msheireb Downtown Doha concepts. Besides, it is an essential requirement that the project has not been submitted to other competitions.
Submission is open via the Msheireb Museums website, www.msheirebmuseums.com, until November 30.
A special jury made up of members of Msheireb Museums and Msheireb Properties from various professional backgrounds, such as museums, design, retail, and a member of Virginia Commonwealth University School of the Arts in Qatar, will evaluate the submissions and choose three winners. The winning designers will receive prizes and also have their names acknowledged on all sold merchandise of their designs.
Submissions will undergo two phases of selection and the final verdict and awards will be announced in the second half of January 2021.
Msheireb Museums organises creative exhibitions that shed light on Qatari heritage and history. The gift shop at Msheireb Museums is "a perfect space to display and buy traditional gifts representing Qatar's identity and heritage", a statement notes.
"Msheireb Museums mark a significant milestone for Msheireb Properties in realising the vision of Msheireb Downtown Doha, Qatar's first sustainable regeneration project. The Museums celebrate the history of four historic heritage houses in the heart of Msheireb Downtown Doha. Located within the oldest part of the capital, they form an essential part of Qatar's national history. These reconstructed buildings and gallery spaces allow the community to engage in the significant aspects of Qatar's past and memories of life before the country's rapid economic development," the statement adds.
