HE the Minister of State for Energy Affairs Saad bin Sherida al-Kaabi has highlighted efforts, which have been made to create a culture for the optimal use and rationalisation of water resources in a way that will positively reflect people’s lives and welfare.
He was addressing the 11th Governing Board Meeting of the Regional Centre on Urban Water Management (RCUWM) yesterday.
The meeting, held under the auspices of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (Unesco), was held with the participation of Oman, Iraq, Iran, Armenia, Azerbaijan, India, Pakistan, Afghanistan and Tajikistan.
In his remarks at the meeting, al-Kaabi welcomed the members of the Council, and voiced Qatar’s appreciation for the invitation to take part in this important meeting, which would help enhance regional and international co-operation in water management.
Reza Ardakanian, Minister of Energy of Iran and President of RCUWM, opened the meeting by reviewing the centre’s activities and achievements, noting the importance of its long and medium-term programmes in achieving the objectives Unesco’s programme.
On his part, the centre’s director, Ali Javushian reviewed the items of the agenda and highlighted the recommendations of the tenth meeting.
The meeting, which was held virtually and attended by Essa bin Hilal al-Kuwari, president of Qatar General Electricity and Water Corporation (Kahramaa), discussed expanding co-operation between member states in the water sector.
The participants also reviewed the report on the tenth meeting, which was held recently in Tehran and the RCUWM’s work and its upcoming plans.
The participants were briefed on the centre’s programmes for joint scientific research on water issues in the region, methods of information exchange and technology transfer, and documenting best practices and lessons learned and raising recommendations in this respect.
The Governing Council is the most important decision-making body of RCUWM, and it consists of 17 members from Afghanistan, Armenia, Azerbaijan, Bangladesh, Egypt, Germany, India, Iran, Iraq, Lebanon, Oman, Pakistan, Qatar, Sri Lanka, Syria, Tajikistan, and Turkey.
