* Schneider Electric implements site-wide Scada System

A site-wide supervisory control and data acquisition management solution is being installed for Qatar Foundation’s (QF) Education City.

The technology by Schneider Electric will be implemented across every large building on campus, 42 in all, and will give QF’s operations and security teams a single, centralised platform to manage a number of processes across Education City, including monitoring and controlling energy usage, and temperature settings.

The system provides a single, unified environment for real-time data acquisition, analysis, visualisation and integration of various applications.

Education City houses branch campuses of some of the world’s leading universities, including Carnegie Mellon University, Georgetown University, Virginia Commonwealth University, Northwestern University, Texas A&M University and Weill Cornell-Medicine, as well as Hamad Bin Khalifa University, Qatar Foundation’s homegrown university, research institutes and community facilities.

While each building has its own building management system, Qatar Foundation plans a solution that would enable a single unified view and operation from two central control rooms for 42 sites across Education City. Based on the company’s Wonderware technology, Schneider Electric delivered a scalable and efficient solution that is inter-operable with all the infrastructure on campus, called Scada System.

The system, which includes a layer of cyber security, pulls in, stores and analyses information from 316,000 data points across the 42 buildings on campus. Customisable dashboards show information in a simplified display, giving the operations team a unified real-time view of what is happening in every building monitor and allowing them to manage the whole campus from the one location. The result is greater operational flexibility, more efficient energy usage, and a greener, more sustainable campus.

The system also interfaces with Archibus, a web-based maintenance application utilised by Education City Operations for daily operation and maintenance requirements and reporting.

“Qatar Foundation’s Education City is a testament to the importance that the country places on education and knowledge, and we’re delighted to be able to support this initiative by rolling out technology that’s going to benefit everyone working and studying there,” said ?smail Yamangil, general manager for Qatar at Schneider Electric. “This solution is going to make managing the facilities much simpler to manage and maintain. And given that it’s scalable, the solution will grow with Education City. The benefits will be a campus that is more energy efficient and greener, safer and comfortable.”

“The implemented site-wide Scada System from Schneider Electric aligns Education City with our leadership’s vision of making it a Smart City, controlled from centralised command centeres to attain optimum operability for Education City facilities and reduce their carbon footprint and maintenance costs,” added Georgios Sichanis, Qatar Foundation’s project manager for the Scada project.
