The Embassy of Pakistan in Doha on Sunday observed Defence Day of Pakistan with solemnity while complying with the local regulations related to the Covid-19 pandemic. The function was held early in the morning at the embassy premises where the number of the participants was restricted.

A flag-hoisting ceremony to pay homage to the martyred soldiers of Pakistan Armed Forces was held in the beginning. Pakistan ambassador Syed Ahsan Raza Shah hoisted the national flag. A smartly turned out military contingent gave salute to the flag. All the participants listened to the national anthem.

Later the participants witnessed an emotional and heart-warming documentary paying tribute to heroes of the nation who were awarded the highest gallantry award – the Nishan-e-Haider – for rendering the supreme sacrifice in defence of the motherland. The event was also attended by members of Pakistani Armed Forces and the embassy staff. A cake cutting ceremony was also held.

In his speech, Ambassador Syed Ahsan Raza Shah highlighted the significance of the day in the history of Pakistan. The ambassador said: “The sacrifices of the members of Pakistan Armed Forces in the line of duty are to be remembered. Further, the day not only is a remembrance of the martyrs and ghazis but it also refreshes the enthusiasm and rejuvenates the resolve to work for the progress and prosperity of the motherland. It inspires all Pakistanis to serve the country with greater dedication and to keep the green and white flag, which symbolises the nation’s hopes and aspirations, flying even higher.”

The ambassador laid stress on the point that Pakistan strives for peace. “We do strive for peace in the region and around the globe, and support resolution of all disputes through peaceful means. However the Pakistani nation and its armed forces are always fully geared up to confront any challenge threatening the national security.”

He also referred to the sacrifices of Pakistan in the global war against terror and mentioned the significant contribution of the Pakistan Armed Forces in UN peace-keeping operations and in providing humanitarian assistance globally in case of natural disasters.

Highlighting the bilateral relations between Pakistan and Qatar, the ambassador said: “The ties are based on historical bonds of a shared fate, heritage and culture.” He expressed confidence at the excellent bilateral defence relations stating that a large number of veterans of Pakistan Armed Forces are rendering services in Qatar Armed Forces while Qatar Armed Forces officers and personnel regularly avail training facilities in Pakistan.
