* Collections will offer fascinating insight into how humans seek shelter and individual interpretation of traditional Qatari food
As part of a series of crowdsourced virtual exhibitions launched earlier this year, the National Museum of Qatar (NMoQ) unveiled two exhibitions on September 1.
The exhibitions, hosted in partnership with Google Arts & Culture, feature content curated by members of the community.
For the exhibitions, NMoQ invited its digital audience to contribute to developing the content based on themes featured in the museum’s permanent collection.
The Habitats & Shelters exhibition, inspired by NMoQ’s ‘Qatar Natural Environment’ and ‘Life in Al Barr (Desert)’ galleries explore how, in times of uncertainty, humans and animals take shelter to survive.
The exhibition includes photographs, illustrations and sketches submitted by the community depicting how they adapted to their habitat and living space during self-isolation.
With intangible heritage being a central theme explored across NMoQ’s story, the Qatar’s Culinary Journey exhibition highlights traditional and personal interpretations of Qatari food. For the exhibition, members of the community were called on to submit photographs of traditional Qatari cuisine – from karak to gahwa to mathrooba, harees and other dishes – as well as a short statement explaining how the participant learned to make the dish.
The exhibition also includes Qatar's Culinary Journey: Special Invitation to Qatari Celebrations and Qatar’s Culinary Journey: How to Prepare Gahwa.
“The series of exhibitions was launched as a response to the Covid-19 pandemic to provide a creative outlet for our digital audience during these challenging times. We invite members of the community to explore these unique collections that provide fascinating insights into how we have all adapted to and endured the current pandemic,” NMoQ director Sheikha Amna bint Abdulaziz bin Jassim al-Thani said.
The exhibition will be hosted on the Google Arts & Culture platform, which features content from over 2,000 leading museums and archives that have partnered with the Google Cultural Institute to preserve and bring the world’s art and culture online.
