The Ministry of Municipality and Environment (MME) represented by the Department of Industrial Inspection and Pollution Control held the inaugural meeting of the draft rewriting of the national plan to combat oil pollution and harmful and dangerous materials, via video conferencing.
During the meeting, the Director of Department of Industrial Inspection and Pollution Control Mohamed Ayed al-Shamari, stressed the importance of the country's strategic project which lies in the effective preparation for confronting incidents of oil pollution and pollution with harmful and dangerous materials at all local, regional and international levels, and in implementation of international agreements that Qatar has joined, the most important of which is the International Convention on Oil Pollution Preparedness, Response and Co-operation (OPRC 1990).
For his part, the team leader assigned to implement the project gave a presentation that included the previous work that the company implemented at the regional and Gulf levels, and explained its stages, the expected time period for the completion of each stage and the importance of the role of the main authorities in these stages.
A number of officials and partners participating in the project took part in the meeting. These partners will have a major role in implementing the plan to combat oil pollution and pollution with harmful and dangerous materials, which are the ministries of: Defence, Interior, Foreign Affairs, Transport and Communications, and Public Health, in addition to Qatar Petroleum, Qatar General Electricity & Water Corporation, Mwani Qatar, General Authority of Customs, and representatives of the consulting company implementing the project, which is SpillConsult Ltd, specialising in this field.
