The local agricultural product yards have seen record sales of Qatari vegetables in the 2019-2020 season, the Ministry of Municipality and Environment (MME) has said.
According to figures released by the MME's Agricultural Affairs Department, total volume of local vegetable sales at the Al Mazrouah, Al Khor-Al Thakhira, Al Wakra, Al Sheehaniya and Al Shamal yards stood at 16,035 tonnes during the eighth (2019-2020) season.

Al Mazrouah topped the list with sales of 7,834 tonnes, followed by Al Khor-Al Thakira with 3,650 tonnes, the ministry said in a statement.
As for fruits, a total of 6,253 tonnes were sold during the season. The Al Wakra yard was ranked first with sales of 2,111 tonnes, followed by Al Mazrouah with 1,765 tonnes and Al Khor-Al Thakira with 1,629 tonnes, the statistics revealed.
The report by the department said the sales of local agricultural product yards during the 2019-2020 season showed a significant increase compared to all previous seasons.
The yards also achieved other distinguished sales during this season, as about 84 tonnes of fish were sold. Besides 35,000 heads of poultry, 14,000 sheep and goats, 22,000 eggs and 3.6 tonnes of natural bee honey were also marketed.
During 2019-2020, sales of local vegetables at the yards increased by more than 120% compared to the last season while sales of fruits increased by 13%. Also, sales of eggs, natural honey and sheep increased by 24%, 43% and 18%, respectively, the statement added.
The yards, for the first time, witnessed the continuation of work during all days of the week from mid-March until the end of June.
The yards were open to all farms in order to facilitate the marketing of their agricultural products and provide local vegetables to consumers.
The MME's Agricultural Affairs Department has also chalked out plans to further develop the Al Mazrouah, Al Wakra, Al Khor-Al Thakhira, Al Shamal and Al Sheehaniya yards.
An official had told local Arabic daily Arrayah that the development operations include the expansion of some of their sections due to an increase in the number of farms that are expected to participate in the yards initiative next season.
