The Ministry of Municipality and Environment yesterday cautioned beachgoers by quoting a weather report from the Civil Aviation Authority about the dangers of the rip current, a natural phenomenon that may cause drowning. The narrow water current causes water to flow very fast from the beach towards the sea. The rip current usually has a dark colour and does not have waves, making it a tempting place to swim. Tips to survive if caught in a rip current include staying calm, not to swim against it, or try to float calmly while yelling or waving for help.
