Light injuries have accounted for most traffic accidents in May, the Planning and Statistics Authority (PSA) stated in its latest monthly report.
Traffic accidents, excluding accidents without injuries, registered a total of 332 cases in May 2020, reflecting a monthly increase of 0.9%.
The PSA recorded 90% of light injuries and 7% for serious injuries during the same period. However, 11 deaths were recorded, equivalent to only 3% of total traffic accidents.
The total number of registered new vehicles in May stood at 1,878 new vehicles, showing a monthly decrease of 25.9% and an annual decrease of 66.8%, the report stated.
The PSA said it observed changes in its monthly bulletin’s indicators due to the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic on various sectors in Qatar, including a decline in maritime traffic as the number of vessels called at Qatar ports in May dropped to 321 or a monthly decrease of 14.6% compared to April, and an annual decrease of 39.1% compared to May 2019.
The “most prominent change” in May, the PSA said, was the increase in electricity and water consumption. The use of electricity increased by 24.8% over April 2020, while water consumption increased by 12.6% during the same period.
Total electricity consumption in May 2020 was 3978.2GWh or a monthly increase of 24.8% and an annual decrease of 5.5%. The total water consumption reached 58067.0 thousand m3 during the same month, attaining a monthly increase of 12.6% and an annual rise of 4.6%.
Real estate sector also declined as the number of building permits issued in May decreased by 43.9% compared to April, and by 58.9% compared to May 2019. Likewise, the number of sold properties in May fell by 16.3% compared to April, and by 45.6 % compared to May 2019.
The demographic statistics revealed that Qatar’s total population increased from 2.74mn in May 2019 to 2.80mn by the end of May 2020.
On vital statistics, 1,370 live births were registered in May 2020. Also, the total Qatari live births increased by 90.8% compared to April. On the other hand, 238 deaths were recorded during the same period, an increase of 43.4% compared to April 2020.
May 2020 experienced a monthly increase by 10.0% in marriage contracts, while the divorce certificates remained the same. The total number of marriage contracts stood at 165, while the total number of divorces reached 12 cases or one divorce for every 14 marriages.
Social security statements reached QR85mn in May 2020 for 15,514 beneficiaries for a monthly increase of 0.4% and 0.7% for the value of social security and the number of beneficiaries, respectively.
Regarding buildings permits issued, the total number reached 271 permits in May 2020, recording a monthly decrease of 43.9%.
For the banking sector, the Total Broad Money Supply (M2) recorded about QR583.4bn in May 2020, an annual increase of 5.1% compared with May 2019.
On the other hand, cash equivalents, including Commercial Bank Deposits, attained for QR864.4bn in May 2020. The figure has recorded an annual increase of 7.2% compared to May 2019, when deposits recorded approximately QR806.3bn.
