Qatar Charity (QC) will open the largest education city for orphans in Sudan, it has been announced.
Officials at the Ministry of Education in Sudan have noted the importance of Taiba Education City in Omdurman, which is about to be accomplished with the support of a philanthropist from Qatar, providing a qualitative addition to the orphan service and care.
The work at Taiba Education City, implemented by Qatar Charity, is nearing completion. It aims to provide comprehensive care for 600 orphans and is expected to benefit 6,600 people - including orphans, their families and those most in need from the areas south of Khartoum State.
The project is 95% complete, according to Hussein Karmash, director of QC’s office in Sudan. He expects it to be completed within one and a half months after the end of the Covid-19 lockdown in Sudan.
He also noted that Taiba Education City would be fully ready for opening before the beginning of the school year in September, pointing out that the process of selecting orphaned students is now underway according to specific criteria, in full co-ordination with specialists at the Ministry of Education.
Mohamed Ibrahim Ali Fadlallah, director-general of the Ministry of Education in the state of Khartoum, said the “presence of a specialised city that provides integrated educational services for orphans is an addition that has to be welcomed as it will have a clear reflection in society by offering services for orphans”.
The 9,000sq m city consists of many facilities, notably, a foundation school with nine classrooms and a computer lab, and a secondary school with four classrooms, a laboratory, a library and a computer lab, in addition to offices, homes and a health centre that provides medical services for students and the poor from surrounding villages.
The city also has various administrative facilities, dining and activities halls, sports facilities and a dormitory for 600 orphans.
There are nearly 60,000 orphans in the state of Khartoum alone, according to the Ministry of Social Welfare of the state, at a time when sponsorship by governmental organisations and agencies do not exceed 50%.
Professor Mona Ibrahim al-Faki, head of organisations at the Ministry of Education in Khartoum, said Taiba Education City is being established among villages and areas where there are no schools, which will make it very useful for the residents of those villages.
