The Qatar General Electricity and Water Corporation (Kahramaa) has won two prominent awards at the Global Good Governance (3G) Awards in its fifth edition, held through an online ceremony due to the Covid-19 situation, a Kahramaa press statement said.

The awards were given to the National Programme for Conservation and Energy Efficiency (Tarsheed) under two different categories of Global Good Governance Awards 2020.

The World Championship for Sustainability Award, representing Qatar, came for the total projects and savings achieved by Tarsheed during 2019. The achievements include success in reducing electricity consumption by about 7,654,489mW hours, reducing water consumption by about 33.781mn cubic metres and reducing gas consumption by about 73602mn cubic feet.

Tarsheed also received the Creativity Award for 2020 for the Tarsheed PV Electric Vehicles Charging and energy storage station project. This station is the first of its kind in Qatar and it charges vehicles with electricity produced from solar energy through 216 photovoltaic panels. Divided into two areas with a total area of 270sqm equal to a row of 24 cars, the total energy produced by the panels is 72kW.

3G awards prizes are given in three main areas: governance, political leadership and leadership for the corporate sector (which is provided to ministries, institutions and international companies), a sector in which Kahramaa has won. More than 31 countries with more than 80 representations in all categories took part in the awards, which was hosted in London.

The award for sustainability category has been given to Kahramaa’s economic performance, which saved QR2,034.99mn under its Tarsheed Programme until April 2019 within its sustainability-related initiatives and environment protective actions, among others, which included developing an electric car infrastructure, reducing carbon emissions and brainstorming for finding environment-friendly solutions.

The ceremony was put together by Cambridge IFA, which is spearheading a global initiative to promote best practices in governance and sustainability.
