Maharashtra yesterday recorded 109 Covid-19 deaths, taking the states toll to 3,169, officials said.
Mumbai also reported 64 deaths yesterday and the number of coronavirus infections in the city crossed the 50,000 mark the officials said.
The total number of cases in the state increased to 88,528 yesterday, of which 44,374 were active cases. The state has recorded a recovery rate of 46.28% and a mortality rate of 3.57%.
Mumbai’s death toll is 1,702 now, while the number of Covid-19 positive patients shot past the 50,000 mark to touch 50,085.
Besides Mumbai’s 64 deaths, there were eight fatalities in Aurangabad, seven in Pune, six each in Jalgaon and Solapur, five in Thane (Thane, Bhiwandi, Ulhasnagar, Kalyan-Dombivali), four in Dhule, two in Nashik, and one each in Palghar, Ahmednagar, Jalna and Nanded.
On the positive side, 1,661 cured patients returned home yesterday, taking the number of those discharged from the hospitals to 49,975.
Amid apprehensions, the state government eased some restrictions, with semi-normal crowds, traffic and chaos on roads as people rushed to their workplaces after over 80 days of lockdown.
Meanwhile, Kerala’s Covid-19 death toll rose to 16 yesterday when a 41-year-old man who arrived from the Maldives last month died following cardiac arrest, even as the state recorded 91 more cases.
According to state Health Minister K K Shailaja, the patient had kidney and breathing problems.
“There were 91 new positive cases and it includes 73 who came from abroad, while 15 were those who came from within the country. Two health professionals also turned positive, while there was only one person who was a local,” Shailaja said.
